BALCO deploys AI-based safety monitoring technology for enhanced workplace safety

3rd May 2023

Balconagar; 3rd May 2023: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminium producer and a subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminium, has deployed an innovative solution called T-Pulse Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Monitoring System, which leverages cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technology to enhance workplace safety. This initiative is the latest in BALCO’s continuous efforts to adopt best-in-class solutions that bolster the company’s performance and ensure a safe, secure working environment.

The T-Pulse HSSE Monitoring System continuously studies ongoing activity inside the plant in real-time, through a network of cameras integrated into a centralized AI data lake. This solution utilizes one of the most comprehensive AI models available on cameras, sensors, edge devices, and drone data to manage safety risks in daily operations, construction projects, shutdowns, and turnarounds. It is equipped to alert against a diverse range of risks in categories such as Personal Protective Equipment usage, Job Safety/Hazard Communication, Work at Height, Confined Space, Dropped Objects, Lifting & Hoisting, and Traffic Interference & Vehicle Safety, thus aiding in sustainable behavioral change. The system provides 360° coverage, including hard-to-reach areas, and is equipped to detect exceptional conditions on a real-time basis.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, Director and CEO, BALCO stated, “At BALCO, we believe in continuously augmenting our operations and processes to bolster our safety performance and ensure that our workplaces are safe and primed for innovation & business excellence. With the launch of the T-Pulse HSSE Monitoring tool, we have taken a significant step towards achieving our goal of ‘Zero Harm, Zero Waste and Zero Discharge’. This comprehensive safety system closely aligns with our guiding priorities of ensuring workforce safety, while leveraging digitalization & innovation for operational excellence. With more such deployments planned in the near term, we aim to nurture a safer, encouraging and productive environment for everyone working with us, today and always.”

Testament to its technology-first approach to manufacturing excellence, BALCO has received numerous recognitions, including the prestigious ‘Manufacturing Today – Reinventing the Future’ Award. The company has also been declared ‘Platinum Winner’ at the 5th CII National Safety Practices Competition for its ‘Suraksha Sankalp Kutumbh’ project on safety digitalization.
