BALCO Advances Cancer Awareness and Prevention in Plant and Communities

19th February 2025

Balconagar, 19th February 2025 – Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminium producer and part of Vedanta Aluminium, is steadfast in its commitment to health and well-being, organizing year-round initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of early cancer detection and prevention.

BALCO actively conducts awareness programs to educate frontline workers, teachers, and employees on the significance of early cancer detection and prevention. Understanding that women play a crucial role in safeguarding their families’ health, BALCO prioritizes their education in cancer awareness, ensuring they are equipped with essential knowledge to drive informed health decisions. These awareness talks and sessions aim to empower women with knowledge about cancer prevention, creating a ripple effect in the community and promoting a healthier society. In addition to awareness programs, BALCO has conducted numerous free cancer screening camps within local communities. These camps provide screenings for breast, cervical, and head & neck cancers, along with essential services such as mammography, pap smear tests, brush cytology, expert consultations, and general health check-ups.

Recently, BALCO also had a subsidized HPV vaccination camp for its female workforce. More than 140 employees and business partners, along with their daughters, voluntarily opted to receive the first dose of the vaccine. This voluntary initiative encouraged BALCO’s female workforce to proactively safeguard their health in an informed and supportive environment. BALCO is taking significant steps to provide affordable healthcare with a special focus on cancer care, creating a long-term wellness in plant and communities.

Talking about the importance of cancer awareness, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director of BALCO, said, “Cancer affects not just the patient but the entire support system around them. By creating awareness, encouraging early detection, and making preventive care more accessible, we aim to ease this burden. At BALCO, we are committed to ensuring that the community, our employees, and their families have the knowledge and resources to take control of their health, because detection and timely intervention can make all the difference.”

Expressing his appreciation for BALCO’s efforts, Mr. Badri Kiran, Parshad, Parsabhata, said, “Cancer is a growing concern in our communities, and lack of awareness often leads to late detection, making treatment more challenging and costly for families. BALCO’s initiatives, from awareness sessions to free screenings and vaccination drives, are giving people the knowledge and resources to take preventive action. These efforts will go a long way in ensuring better health outcomes for all in our village.”

Bharat, an employee of BALCO whose daughter received the vaccination, shares, “Before this initiative, I knew very little about the HPV vaccine. However, the discussions and awareness efforts, especially on cancer, helped me understand its importance. While the cost of the vaccine can be high, learning about its availability at subsidized rates made it a viable option for us. Having access to it close to home made the decision even easier. I shared this information with my family, and together, we chose to take this proactive step toward my daughter’s health.”

Through sustained efforts in cancer prevention and health education, BALCO is fostering a well-informed society equipped to combat cancer effectively. By offering opportunities for early detection, preventive care, and access to quality treatment, BALCO continues to champion the cause of public health and well-being.
