BALCO Leads Transformative Road Safety Awareness Month Drive Reaching 5,000 Lives

3rd February 2026

Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminium producer and a unit of Vedanta Aluminium, marked the 37th National Road Safety Month under the theme ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha’, engaging over 5,000 employees, business partners and community members through a month-long series of structured awareness initiatives aimed at strengthening responsible road behaviour within and around its operations.

The campaign featured a wide array of activities across BALCO’s operational ecosystem and neighbouring communities, focusing on road discipline, traffic awareness and preventive safety practices. Activities included quizzes, nukkad nataks, fire safety demonstrations, drawing and slogan competitions for employees and school students. BALCO also introduced ‘Road Rush’, a gamified learning module designed to test awareness and encourage safe driving behaviour among routine drivers. Awareness sessions and emergency response drills conducted in local schools focused on educating young participants on traffic discipline and accident prevention. A dedicated carpooling challenge further promoted collective responsibility and sustainable commuting practices.

The company also organised eye and health check-up camps for drivers operating heavy vehicles across its logistics network. To reinforce compliance with internal safety standards, surprise vehicle inspections were carried out, ensuring safe vehicle conditions and adherence to traffic norms.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director, BALCO, said “Road safety is an extension of BALCO’s commitment to Zero Harm. Every safe journey reflects disciplined behaviour, awareness and accountability. Through sustained engagement with employees, business partners and communities, BALCO is building a culture where safety becomes a shared responsibility and a daily practice. Our objective is not limited to awareness, but to create measurable behavioural change that protects lives on and beyond our operational boundaries.”

Mahak Yadav, a student from Bal Sadan School, said, “The sessions taught us how small mistakes on the road can lead to big accidents. BALCO’s programme helped us understand road rules better, and I feel more confident about staying safe while travelling.”

Towards building a robust safety culture, the company has incorporated several cutting-edge technologies within its operations, including:
T-Pulse Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) monitoring system, which uses AI-enabled camera networks to track on-ground activities and ensure compliance.

Centralized Security Operations Centre (CSOC) integrates digital intelligence and data analytics to strengthen security management, traffic and road safety oversight, and supply chain security.
Hot Spot Detection System at the coal yard enables real-time dashboards and trend analysis which uses thermal inspection to identify potential hazards.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) have been deployed across internal vehicular operations to enhance road safety within plant premises.

Targeted health interventions, including training and testing on World Diabetes Day, and mental health counselling sessions as part of the well-being framework.

‘Safety Stewards’ initiative continues to identify and empower shop-floor employees and business partners who demonstrate consistent commitment to safety alongside operational responsibilities.

The company conducts year-round safety sensitisation for employees, families and communities through structured workshops and retro-reflective safety infrastructure. BALCO’s sustained commitment to safety excellence has earned national and international recognition, including awards at the British Safety Council International Safety Awards 2025.
