Making Healthcare Services Affordable and Accessible

This project is a comprehensive health initiative designed to provide high-quality primary healthcare services, both preventive and curative, through Rural Health Posts. It focuses on maternal and child health, with a special emphasis on reducing malnutrition and anaemia, as well as raising awareness about HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and de-addiction. Our holistic approach aims to make healthcare more accessible and improve the overall health of rural communities. During the year, the program reached over 49,000 people through both curative and preventive healthcare services.

Our three Rural Health Posts offer essential outpatient department (OPD) services, treatment, and general testing to neighbouring communities, benefiting more than 5,000 people. Additionally, in partnership with the District Health Department under the Mukhya Mantri Haat Bazar Swasthya Yojana, we have organized health camps in remote villages, providing vital healthcare services to over 3,500 beneficiaries.

The project is currently being run in partnership with the Social Revival Group of Urban Rural and Tribal (SROUT).

Maternal and Child Health is a key focus of our initiative. We aim to reduce malnutrition among children by identifying and intervening in cases of malnutrition. Our targeted interventions include Positive Deviance (PD) hearth sessions and referrals to Nutritional Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs). Furthermore, we have educated mothers on nutritious recipes from Take Home Ration (THR) and developed nutrition gardens at Anganwadi centers and in households to create a lasting impact. In FY’25, over 5,000 mothers learned best caregiving practices, and we addressed malnutrition in over 900 children, resulting in a significant number of them moving out of the malnourished category.

BALCO presents ‘Poshan Talks’ a video series aimed at raising awareness about Health & Nutrition within the communities.

Anaemia reduction is another critical component of our health initiatives, particularly for pregnant and lactating mothers. Through anaemia screenings and targeted reduction camps, we educated 1,148 mothers on iron-rich diets and the importance of Iron Folic Acid (IFA) consumption. Follow-up home visits ensure that improvements are sustained, leading to healthier pregnancies and births. Additionally, our ‘Nava Pahuna Goth’ initiative provides family counselling for newly married couples, focusing on family planning and pre-pregnancy care.

Our extensive HIV and TB awareness campaigns have made a significant impact on rural communities. Through canopy camps, counselling sessions, and mass awareness campaigns, we have trained youth to become changemakers, promoting peer-based learning. Over the year, our activities reached more than 30,000 people across various communities. We have also trained frontline health workers to educate the community about TB identification and treatment, further raising awareness among over 900 community members. Through the Nikshay Mitra initiative, we supported the nutrition of TB patients in 56 neighbouring villages, significantly aiding their recovery.

In our efforts to combat addiction, we have conducted de-addiction camps that have sensitized over 1,000 youth in schools and communities about the  dangers of drug addiction. We have also formed 20 action groups, consisting of local health bodies and self-help groups, to work toward building addiction-free communities.

For sustained health outcomes, we have revitalized and capacitated local health bodies such as Mahila Arogya Samiti and the Village Health, Sanitation & Nutrition Committee, which now cover over 600 PRI members and local health workers.

Mobile Health Van

Healthcare at Your Doorstep

The Mobile Health Van (MHV) is bringing essential healthcare directly to the doorsteps of those in need. Serving nearby communities through fortnightly visits, health camps, and specialized consultation services, the MHV addresses critical issues of healthcare inaccessibility, unavailability, and affordability.

In FY’24, more than 22,000 people benefited from healthcare services through regular visits, specialized services, and multispecialty health camps. This year, we expanded our reach by launching an additional Mobile Health Van, increasing our outreach to over 70 villages.

To provide specialized care, we organize multispecialty mega health camps, offering a range of services including orthopaedics, dental care, ENT, paediatrics, gynaecology, physiotherapy, as well as blood and sugar screenings. Additionally, we conduct awareness camps focused on cancer prevention, vaccination, and other health and hygiene topics, ensuring communities are informed and empowered to make healthier choices.

In our effort to support the elderly and specially abled, we conduct assistive device distribution drives to improve mobility and enhance quality of life. In the first phase, 34 individuals were provided with devices such as walking sticks, tripods, crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs.

Taking a proactive approach to community mental well-being, we organize mental health awareness trainings to empower community-based volunteers in identifying and addressing mental health issues.

This program is being implemented in partnership with HelpAge India.

Nayi Kiran

Menstrual Health Management

This initiative is being implemented in partnership with Sarthak Jan Vikas Sansthan (SJVS).

Menstrual health remains one of the most stigmatized and overlooked topics in our society, yet addressing it is essential for improving women’s overall health and empowerment. Project Nayi Kiran is dedicated to breaking myths and taboos surrounding menstruation, promoting sustainable hygiene practices, and raising awareness about menstrual health management (MHM) options. The initiative also focuses on creating MHM-friendly environments in schools and communities, ensuring safe reproductive health for all.

During FY’25, the project reached over 70,000 individuals, including women, men, and adolescents through awareness campaigns and capacity-building activities. The project successfully expanded its reach across all five blocks of Korba district.

To promote an MHM-friendly environment in schools, we conducted sessions on menstrual health management in 106 government middle, secondary, and higher secondary schools in Korba district. This initiative sensitized over 18,000 adolescents. Additionally, over 70 teachers were trained as ‘MHM Sathis’ to create a supportive and informed atmosphere in schools.

We organized specialized MHM sessions and workshops for over 100 specially-abled adolescents and caregivers. We also developed Braille and Terracotta modules to ensure accessibility and foster sustained learning. In a groundbreaking initiative, we held the first-ever reusable cloth pad stitching workshop with specially-abled participants, offering safe menstrual health management alternatives, reducing dependency, and fostering inclusivity.

To provide sustainable and affordable menstrual hygiene solutions, we focused on raising awareness about informed choices and environmentally friendly alternatives such as reusable cloth pads. Through the ‘Stitch My Own Pad Campaign’, we trained over 3,900 women, adolescent girls, teachers, and health workers on the benefits and hygienic use of reusable cloth pads. Furthermore, we trained over 1,300 boys to promote an inclusive and supportive environment for menstrual health.

Promoting community cleanliness and sanitation is key to fostering an overall healthy environment. We organized Cleanliness Drives (Safai Mahotsav) in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation Department, engaging over 5,000 participants, including adolescent girls, boys, women, teachers, Panchayat members, and local residents. These drives focused on sustainable waste management and encouraged community ownership of cleanliness initiatives.

To ensure lasting impact, we trained over 200 frontline workers (Anganwadi workers and ASHAs) as Master Trainers, empowering them as leaders of change in their communities. These trained workers then reached out to over 5,000 adolescent girls and women, driving positive behavioral change at the grassroots level.

The hospital provided affordable shelter to patients and their attendants at Rs. 25 per day, minimizing travel risks and ensuring safety from infections. Over 9,390 patients were served, and 11308 attendants have benefited from this initiative.

Recognizing the importance of nutrition in recovery, BMC served approximately 7,616 portions of high-protein food—such as almonds, dates, bananas, multi-millet Nutri-bars, and Threptin biscuits—to all chemotherapy patients to support their recovery.

To facilitate easy access to the hospital, BMC provides free transportation via a 25-seater vehicle. The service runs three times a day, helping over 7,100 patients
